Put Out into the Deep
July 8 2025
In this edition, ran award-winning interview, a podcast drop, and last chance for Boston: registration!
Unity and Witness
Marissa Nichols, of The Valley Catholic, the magazine of the Diocese of San Jose, just won two awards from the Catholic Media Association! Her interview with Eve won “Best Interview” and placed third in the “Best Essay” category.
Building Catholic Futures will return to the Valley Catholic on Wednesday, July 9 for a podcast conversation among Eve, Keith, and Bishop Oscar Cantu'. The full interview will drop tomorrow at the link below, but if you click today, there's a trailer posted.
Here’s a brief excerpt from Marissa's interview with Eve. It touches on one of the themes of our work with Catholic institutions: How can we create ministry approaches which draw out everyone’s insights, even when they’re coming from very different perspectives? How can we converge, from our varied starting points, on the heart of the Catholic Faith?
'The key to unity lies in working for encounters of mutual trust between individuals and the Church. Eve explained, “The Church has wisdom, and individuals have unique insight into their own lives. As much as I am obedient to the Church, I must trust that you have some insight into what is going on with you.” This trust between individuals and the Church only happens when all parties trust that their neighbor will work to protect each other’s values.'
Boston Retreat Filling Up Fast!
Due to unexpectedly high demand, we will be pausing registration for our August 7 – 10 Confident Witness retreat on Monday, July 14. We need to adjust our accommodations! Sign up before July 14 to guarantee your spot at our exploration of discipleship, witness, and mission for LGBT/SSA+ Catholics. Anyone who registers after July 14 will be added to a wait list and be contacted as soon as we know how many people we will be able to accommodate.
We would love to see you there in Boston—and beyond! We’ve already begun planning the second Confident Witness. We’re excited and moved to see how many people are eager to share their witness as gay disciples. Stay tuned and consider sponsoring a Confident Witnesses Retreat in your neck of the woods.
Prayer Requests
Please pray for Eve’s mother, for a successful surgery and recovery.
Please pray for all those signed up for Boston, and those who are considering whether they can attend!
And please pray that our diversity fosters Church unity, as Pope Leo XVI exhorted us on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul:
"Let us make an effort, then, to turn our differences into a workshop of unity and communion, of fraternity and reconciliation, so that everyone in the church, each with his or her personal history, may learn to walk side by side."
