Put Out into the Deep
May 13 2025
This week, we’re looking at a new pope — and questioning what it means for a pope to be “new."
White Smoke
Habemus papam! If you’re anything like us, you’ve already read plenty of profiles of Pope Leo XIV and speculations about what this American Pope means for the future of the Church. (Did you see that Portillo’s, the Chicagoland street-food chain, has a new sandwich called “The Leo”? Did you see that Spike Lee said the papal election was a “holy blessing” on the New York Knicks? You know the first Pope Leo crushed Atilla the Hun!)
That’s not what this is. We want to take a deep breath and remember what the job of the Holy Father really is:
We’re all called to this:
BCF, too, works to connect eternal truths to the experiences and questions of contemporary people—and we draw on the witness of the past to help us.
Your Prayers and Ours
Please join us in praying for the Holy Father. In prayer, we unite with the souls of the faithful departed and the hosts of Heaven. Prayer is where life’s chaos meets God’s peace: where news meets eternity.
